Big Hero 6 Review: Disney’s Baymax & Hiro are a BIG Hit!

Big Hero 6 Review
Let me just preface this post by saying that my 5 1/2 year old son is a huge movie buff. However… as much as he loves all of his animated movies, it is rare to see my son jumping up and down in his seat in a movie theater in excitement. Never in his 5.5 years have I seen him that excited over a movie — ever. This animated film was a BIG hit for our family — and I am thrilled to finally share my Big Hero 6 review with all of you!

Yes… The time has finally come for my Big Hero 6 review!

First… a message from my son: “Tell them that Baymax is a BIG marshmallow!”

Several days before Big Hero 6 hit theaters nationwide, I attended a screening at Disney Animation Studios here in Los Angeles with my husband and our son, Joey (5 1/2) and our sprouting almost-terrible-two’s bundle of joy, Madison. This was our daughters second time in a theater, so I am perpetually fearful of her behavior, but she was {shockingly} an angel. Why? Because this movie was a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

My son has been interested in Big Hero 6 ever since I wrote about Disney Animation’s San Fransokyo film announcement back in May 2013. He’s a true boy at heart, so anything to do with robots, action heroes, karate, cars, trucks – you’ve got his full attention (and he won’t blink – seriously).

Big Hero 6 is full of action, fun, humor, excitement, jumping, running, and emotion. I wanted to specifically mention emotion  because this is a rare quality in animated films nowadays. Some of the movies that I watch with my son seem too fantasy, too ridiculous, too empty. There’s no backbone connecting the viewer with the true feelings or thoughts of the characters. As a child, I am sure my children barely notice this, but the emotions that were felt for the relationship between Baymax and Hiro really put a spark in the film for the adult viewing audience.

*True story: I teared up during Big Hero 6 (okay, okay.. enough… stop laughing!)!

I loved everything about this film and each character was uniquely portrayed with a different set of varying characteristics and personality types. As much as I loved them all, I fell in love with big ‘ole Baymax!

His personality, mannerisms, and  sense of humor made him such a lovable character. I wish I had my own personal Baymax! He starts off as a prototype robot invention meant to be a healthcare companion. Can you imagine an inflatable robot that could pop out of a briefcase every time you said “ouch” or “that hurt!”?! Baymax is your own personal physician — with the ability to do so much more!

Big Hero 6 Character Poster Baymax
Featured voice cast includes Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Alan Tudyk, and Maya Rudolph. With Big Hero 6 coming from the team behind “Frozen” and Wreck-It-Ralph, I knew this was going to be a guaranteed slam dunk.

Big Hero 6 is about a special bond that forms when child prodigy, Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), develops a plus-sized inflatable robot, Baymax (voiced by Scott Adsit). The story revolves around Hiro’s ingenious ability to create, engineer, and develop robots and gadgets. When his older brother inspires Hiro to think outside of the box, his invention becomes the focal starting point for the story.

When tragedy hit the city of San Fransokyo, Hiro is thrown into the pit of the disaster and quickly spirals down. When it is finally time for Hiro to get back on his feet, he develops a strong bond and relationship with Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred. With the extraordinary help of Baymax, Hiro and his close friends create a band of high-tech super heroes called the Big Hero 6!

[This is one of my favorite scenes – we we’re laughing a lot!]

Throughout the entire film, I turned my head and watched as my son literally jumped out of his seat from pure excitement. His smile went from ear-to-ear and he has not stopped talking about the movie since we attended the screening! I knew how much I loved this film, so it was no surprise to me that my kids fell in love with Big Hero 6.

Mom… dad… grandma… grandpa… – After seeing how my own children responded to this film, I highly recommend this film! Trust me – they’ll be thanking you later once the adrenaline simmers and the laughter stops (it may take a while….). Watching my son and daughter react to Big Hero 6 put a big smile on my face. When they’re happy, I am happy. There is something special about an animated film that not only excites the kids, but which can also capture the attention and laughter of an adult audience. A+!

New York City – The Perfect Destination for a Family Vacation

New York City:

The Perfect Destination for a Family Vacation

New York is also known as ‘The City That Never Sleeps’. So, if you’ve got a young family and you’re due to go on vacation, New York is probably the last on your list of considerations. But we’re here to tell you that the Big Apple is full of activities that the whole family will love. With everything from zoos to visit and picnics in the park to enjoy, we can guarantee that there’s something to keep children of all ages entertained.

American Museum of Natural History

Almost every little boy goes through a phase where they’re obsessed with dinosaurs. So, rather than sit at home and watch Jurassic Park for the seventh time, why not take them to the American Museum of Natural History? They are in proud possession of a huge Tyrannosaurus rex fossil that is sure to excite and delight your children in equal measure. A trip to the museum is fun for the kids as well as being educational. So, this is a trip that will keep both the kids and the parents happy.

Picnic in Central Park

New York is a thriving metropolis, where you and your family will get to experience the hustle and bustle of the big city. But it’s also far easier than you might have imagined to ‘get away from it all’ and enjoy some peace and quiet. Right in the center of the city lies Central Park, which is beautifully maintained and a lovely place to share a picnic with your family. You could also end the day by exploring the park in a horse-drawn carriage. The kids will love it, and it’s a great way of spending some quality family time together.

See a Game at Madison Square Gardens

If your children are big sports fans, then no visit to New York would be complete without seeing a game at the world-famous Madison Square Gardens. If sport really isn’t your thing, they also host music events including performances by artists such as Billy Joel and Usher. So, check to see what’s on before you book to help ensure that you pick something the whole family can enjoy.

I Love New York

Many of the music concerts and sports games finish quite late in the evening. So, we recommend that you book a reservation in one of the nearby New York apartments. Then if you are traveling with younger children, at least you won’t have far to go to get to your accommodation.

Bronx Zoo

If your little ones happen to be animal crazy, they’ll absolutely love a day trip to the Bronx Zoo. It offers a rare chance to get up close to some of the world’s most exotic and fascinating of animals. Everything from crocodiles, gorillas, through to elephants and polar bears call the Bronx Zoo their home. So, if you fancy spending a day with your children that they won’t forget in a hurry, the Bronx Zoo should be at the top of your list of places to visit.

Welcome to Manhattan New York City Traffic

I bet you didn’t realize quite how much there was for families to see and do in New York. Well, now that you do, there’s no excuse – you better book some tickets!

It’s time for a November CASH Giveaway!

Happy November! It’s time for a November cash giveaway! Things are finally starting to cool down a bit here in Los Angeles, so I am kind of-sort of-maybe beginning to feel Autumn in these parts. Plus, I really only get that cool Autumn sensation in the early morning and nights in L.A., which I am so not accustomed to since I am a born-and-raised New Yorker for 30 years!

In light of the recent (but likely only temporary) cooler temperatures and also the welcoming of November (which means a whole slew of fun things to come, such as my 5th annual holiday gift guide, Christmas, and New Years Eve!), I have decided to throw a celebratory giveaway!

Save Time with Suavitel Fast Dry Laundry Fabric Softener

Save Time Laundry Suavitel
With only 24 hours in my day, I have to make use out of every single minute that I am given. I have two young children (one of which is headed full steam ahead into her terrible two’s), work at home full-time as a parenting blogger, and of course I have a household to manage. When every second counts, I need to find a faster, quicker, and easier way to do things, so I was ecstatic when I found Suavitel Fast Dry fabric softener for my laundry!

Laundry Fabric Softener Fast Dry Suavitel.
Is it just me, or does the laundry pile seem to never end? Sometimes I joke with my husband that we should just setup a bed for me to sleep in right next to the laundry room. I was spending so much time in there, so why not just live next to the machines? I make jokes, but unfortunately it was the truth. It’s a moms worst nightmare and it is never ending. The laundry is always going to be there and it will perpetually be a problem — until now.

Save Energy Costs Laundry
Would I rather spend time with washer and dryer, or enjoy a pumpkin patch with my children? Tough choice, but I think 99.999% of my fellow parents would agree the kids are much more fun than doing laundry on a Friday night (any night, actually….)!

How To Use Fabric Softener Laundry
I started doing my own laundry at a young age. I wasn’t happy with my mom when she stopped doing my laundry, but I now have a deep appreciation since I grew to be self-sufficient and independent due to the knowledge and tools that she gave me as a young girl. One of the first lessons that she gave me was how to use fabric softener and I haven’t stopped using it since! Many of my friends in college would look at me like I was crazy; they all thought that it wasn’t necessary to use. Well, let’s just say that I had them all using fabric softener by the end of the first semester!

Dry Clothes Faster Suavitel
Suavitel® Fast Dry™ fabric conditioner features a unique technology that wicks water away from fabric to help clothes dry 30% faster, which leaves you with more time to spend with your loved ones! I found Suavitel in the laundry aisle at Walmart and it is very easy to spot.

Suavitel Fast Dry fabric softeners walmart
Their bottles are super bright colors and pretty, too! I have been using Suavitel for quite a while, but this was my first time giving their Fast Dry fabric conditioner a try. Each bottle of Suavitel® Fast Dry™ will give about 82 small loads and Suavitel is made for high efficiency washers. What would I do with all of that free time?

Suavitel Fast Drying Laundry Softener

My little girl couldn’t keep her chubby lil’ hands off of it!She’s excited to know that mama will have more time for her and less time for her dirty, stained, and smelly laundry!

*Watch my Suavitel Fast Dry Fabric Softener Video!

Available in two different scents, Fabulous Field Flowers and Magical Morning Sun, I anxiously ran home and dumped a load of laundry into our washer. It wasn’t too hard to find a pile of dirty clothes, but I will spare you all of the details (stinky, stinky laundry details!).

Suavitel Fast Dry Clothes Drying Faster
Did I notice a difference? Absolutely. Suavitel® Fast Dry™ means that my clothes are going to need less time in the dryer, which means less time in the laundry room for me and we are also going to save on energy costs! I don’t know about you, but our electric bill is scarier than the scariest haunted house that I have ever experienced. It’s not good, so I am always up for trying something that can help cut costs.

How To Use Fabric Softener Suavitel
Until the day that disposable clothes are invented (never), I am going to have to spend my time doing laundry, which means time away from these adorable and cuddly faces. Thanks to Suavitel® Fast Dry™ fabric softener, I don’t have to live in my laundry room anymore.

I have 30% of my time back and that means more time doing the things that I love: making memories, playground play dates, and of course a lot of time left over for my readers, too!

Halloween Safety Tips: Trick-or-Treating Safety for Parents & Kids

Halloween Safety Tips Kids Parents
Several years ago, I posted a few Halloween safety tips for parents to utilize while trick or treating with the kiddos, but that post seems to have disappeared (seriously). I am assuming it sadly happened during one of my server changes or theme updates in the last 4+ years since I published the post in 2010. With that being said…. moving on! I have decided to publish another Halloween safety post! YAY!

Halloween Tips for Kids:

Look both ways before crossing the street.

Always cross the street at crosswalks or corners — never between two parked cars.

Use nontoxic face paint instead of masks when possible. Masks can obstruct your vision.

Accept treats at the door; do not enter a stranger’s house.

Carry along a flashlight (with brand new batteries, too!).

Do not eat opened candy – ask mom and dad to inspect your collection first.

Stay away from pets that you are unfamiliar with and do not know.

Only approach houses that are well lit.

Halloween Tips for Parents:

Tag along and supervise all minors 10 years old or under.

Ensure costumes fit properly and do not drag along on the floor.

Plan a trick-or-treat route with your children.

Feed the children a healthy and nutritious snack prior to trick-or-treating. This will help avoid snacking on candies that you have yet to inspect.

Be sure costumes are flame retardant.

Make sure your older child is traveling in a group and not alone.

If your child is trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure he knows how to reach you in case of an emergency. Consider slipping an emergency contact card in his back pocket.

Review all of these rules and tips with your child!

Free Halloween Safety Printable

As an easy way to remind your children of the rules for trick-or-treating, I have created a simple Halloween safety tips printable that includes all of these rules Affix to your refrigerator, front door, side door, tack board. Make sure it is recognizable and readily available. Let the rules sink into their heads before it is time to hit the streets. We want to have fun, but we need to do it safely!

Halloween Recipes via. Foodie: Happy Halloween Sweets & Treats

Halloween Recipes Sweets Treats
With Halloween just a few short days away, I am happy to report that I have just about everything set, prepped, and ready to go! The costumes are hung in the closets with care and the spooky decor is setup inside and outside of our new home here in Los Angeles. The treats are ready for our trick or treaters, but I have one thing missing: treats and sweets for our family party!

Now that my son is in kindergarten, I am excited to present his class with a yummy Halloween treat this year for the entire class to enjoy. They’re still young, so I want to avoid a treat that is too sugary, but of course it’s a treat – so I will include it still! They’re going to be eagerly seeking a treat that is fun, colorful, and festive. That’s why I have turned to Foodie to get some great Halloween recipe ideas this year!

Foodie website recipes logo
My collection, Happy Halloween Sweets & Treats, includes some of the yummiest Halloween recipes that I have ever seen! They are so creative, unique, and of course they look absolutely delicious. I have been adding tons of recipes to this collection and seriously may have an addition to Foodie’s Halloween recipes (you will understand why once you’ve seen for yourself!).

Creating a Foodie collection is quite simple and it’s rather addictive, too. The old days of using index cards and scrap piece of paper to store your favorite recipes are long gone — as we all know. Nowadays, I want to catalog all of my things digitally and since we are in a very visual world, I want to remember what it looks like a be able to look at it before I make it (I am sure you feel the same way!).

Thanks to all of my different Foodie recipe collections, I am now able to store recipes based on whatever I want: particular ingredients or cultures, holidays or seasonal foods, desserts or Sunday brunch ideas. The possibilities are seriously endless — and it’s all up to you to decide how your Foodie collection will be organized.

I started off my collection with wanting to do pumpkin styled treats — only. Three recipes in, I started to find a lot of great ideas that I wanted to try out for my family, so I went with it and started adding tons of Halloween desserts and treats that I could probably be busy baking and creating for the next 100 Halloween’s to come.

Browse through the recipes on the front page, or conduct a search using the toolbar on the top of the page. For this particular collection, I actually lucked out and found them all directly on the front page (it’s that time of the year, I suppose!). However, I wanted to also show you how to conduct a search as well. Here’s a snapshot of my results:

Once you have found a recipe that you would like to collect, click on the orange circled + (plus sign). Collect Recipes Add Collection
Thereafter, you will be presented with a popup window asking you to select a collection for your chosen recipe.

Victory! Once you have added the recipe to a new or existing collection, Foodie will let you know that your addition is a success. You can of course use the readily available share buttons to show it off to your Facebook friends or Twitter followers, too.

Now that I have collected my favorite Halloween recipes, I can always go back and look at them once I am ready to create them! For example, I have added a really fun Dracula’s Dentures for Halloween recipe.

Dracula's Dentures Halloween Dessert Recipe
When I view the recipe on Foodie, I can check out the ingredients that it calls for, related recipes, other collections that have included this recipe, and of course View Original Recipe to see the full list of instructions and possibly additional images as provided on the original recipe post.

Another cool thing that I have enjoyed doing to my Foodie collections is adding a background image! It’s a great way to differentiate your collections, create a stylish look dependent on your theme(s), and of course — they’re tons of fun to make and create!

Foodie Add Background Image
Once you’ve finished creating a background image or selecting one that you’ve saved to your computer hard drive, open your collection and find the “Add Background Image” button located in the black collection description box. Upload, save, and check it out to see how it looks positioned at the top of your Foodie Collection!

Ready to start collecting? I can’t wait to see what sort of recipes will pop up next on! Start creating your collections today and be sure to share them in the comments section below so that I can take a look. Use descriptive words in your collection title and description so that other Foodie users can find them, too.

Take a look at all of the different Foodie Collections that I have put together over the last year to get an idea of how you can start to organize recipes online (and follow me, too!).

Five Things You Should Do While Your Child is Still a Toddler

Five Things You Should Do While Your Child is Still a Toddler
Time seems to pass at a rapid rate the older you get and doubly so when a good amount of time is dedicated to taking care of your child. These fleeting moments are like a blink of an eye and before you know it they are all grown up and leaving the nest. One day you’ll look back on these earlier times and reflect. You turn to pictures, home videos, and old work they’ve done in school. The things you save become a keepsake. There are many ways to grab a slice of life out of this time while your child is still a toddler. The following are five worth your while to have something in later life.

Five things you should do

while your child is still a toddler…

1. Impressions

Take one cup of flour, a cup of salt, and ¾ cup of water (according to this guide) and you can create a salt dough which can be used for making impressions for feet and hands. The concoction will harden like a rock so you’ll be able to save it for many years. One day you can sit down with your child and compare the impressions to show how much they’ve grown (along with being a nice keepsake or even a gift to other family members).

Toddler Hand Impressions Craft

2. Portraits

Portrait photography is a great way to capture your child’s youth. Pictures you take with your camera or phone are perfectly fine but a proper portrait is something that sticks on your mantelpiece. These pictures can be done at various times such as holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. The professionals really know how to capture the moment. The portraits make for great memories later in life and great gifts to other family members.

Joey Portrait Toddler

3. Online Accounts

This one sounds a little odd but it’s actually quite smart because website names are always being taken up along with social media accounts. A website name is a nice investment because you never know if one day your child would like to have a website with their name (ex. which is great for building a portfolio. The social media sites may not stick around but sites like Facebook are likely so a vanity URL would be nice for them to inherit (along with the fact you can use it as a timeline).

4. Travel

Although your child may not remember all the moments when you go on vacation it’s still a great activity to do with them because it opens their minds to the rest of the World and its cultures. Travel is a great way to inspire passion and learning. Not only do you deserve the time off but time traveling could be a great bonding experience that your child will never forget.

5. Money

There is a lot of taboo about teaching children about money because it’s not really something they have to deal with considering their age. Lessons in money, at an early age, is actually very important, though, because it sets the foundation for the later years of their life. An allowance will get things started but other aspects of money such as decision making and understanding wants/needs are always a good subject to bring to the table.
