New Years Eve - Toasting 2011 @ MamaNYE

Why not warm up for New Years Eve with a special feature here at MamaNYC?
I am pleased to present Toasting 2011: MamaNYE (Get it? MamaNYE instead of NYC!). I will be bringing some fun New Years quotes, stories, history, facts, party tips and more. These posts will begin rolling out throughout the entire month of December.

The first MamaNYE featured post is going to be simple, but interesting and fun! I have put together a VERY long list of New Years Eve quotes, which should keep you busy for a while! Use these NYE quotes on your own blog, share them with friends on Facebook, or send out a Tweet to let your followers know that you are feelin’ ready to bring in 2012!

Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve.  Middle age is when you’re forced to.

– Bill Vaughn

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

– Bill Vaughan

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.

– Oprah Winfrey

New Year’s is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions.

– Mark Twain

Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account.

– Oscar Wilde

But can one still make resolutions when one is over forty?  I live according to twenty-year-old habits.

– Andre Gide

One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this:  To rise above the little things.

– John Burroughs

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true

– Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.

– Author Unknown

Every man regards his own life as the New Year’s Eve of time.

– Jean Paul Richter

A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.

– Author Unknown

Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits.

– Author Unknown

I made no resolutions for the New Year.  The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.

– Anaïs Nin

New Year’s eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights.

– Hamilton Wright Mabie

The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk.  This drunkenness culminates on New Year’s Eve, when you get so drunk you kiss the person you’re married to.

– P.J. O’Rourke

The new year begins in a snow-storm of white vows.

– George William Curtis

The merry year is born

Like the bright berry from the naked thorn.

 – Hartley Coleridge

The Old Year has gone.  Let the dead past bury its own dead.  The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time.  All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!

– Edward Payson Powell

Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it’s twice as onerous a duty.

– John Selden

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.

   – T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"

No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference.  It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left.  It is the nativity of our common Adam.

– Charles Lamb

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.

– Benjamin Franklin

The only way to spend New Year’s Eve is either quietly with friends or in a brothel.  Otherwise when the evening ends and people pair off, someone is bound to be left in tears.

– W.H. Auden

Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average… which means, you have met your New Year’s resolution.

Why won’t they let a year die without bringing in a new one on the instant, can’t they use birth control on time?  I want an interregnum.  The stupid years patter on with unrelenting feet, never stopping – rising to little monotonous peaks in our imaginations at festivals like New Year’s and Easter and Christmas – But, goodness, why need they do it?

– John Dos Passos, 1917

New Year’s Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time.

– James Agate

New Year’s Day is every man’s birthday.

 – Charles Lamb

My name is Nicole Napolitano and I am a full-time professional parenting blogger and work-at-home mom of two adorable and vivacious children (boy - 6 & girl - 2.5). I decided to develop MamaNYC in 2010 shortly (1-month) after transitioning from work-a-holic Internet marketing pro to the shoes of a stay-at-home mom (bored!). As a dedicated business manager for over 9-years, I was determined and positive that I would once again be a successful business woman -- whether or not I had a diaper bag tagging along! I am a New York City native, but relocated with my husband and our two kids to sunny Los Angeles in the summer of 2014. Leaving everything behind was scary, but it's time to make new memories. My interests include web design, Internet marketing, product development and research, SEO, movies, friends, and spending time with my family.

  1. Love the clever name idea (NYE) smart! I’m personally not a big New Years fan. I’ve never been a partier, I don’t drink and I don’t like being around people who do so for me, it’s exciting because it’s a new year (2012) but that’s it. I didn’t even stay up till midnight last year.

Maybe for a post idea, ways for someone like me who doesn’t party and has three kids (one of which is breastfed and can’t be left with a sitter) to celebrate the new year.

    1. Kathleen,

Don’t worry! I will likely be on the same boat as you. We actually went on NYE 7-day cruises for the past 5-years. This will be the first year we are staying home. It’s going to be strange (parties were very pumped up and full of energy on the cruises).

We may stay up until 12:30-1, but just the 3 of us will be cuddling on the couch watching Times Square on TV 🙂

Good idea!… Especially since this will be my first NYE on the couch too 🙂
